For those that are unaware, recently I was one member of a team to be the first in the world to successfully kitesurf across the Torres Straits from main land Australia to borders of PNG. This is no mean feat and just to boot I decided to do it unstrapped on a surfboard!

Over the next few weeks I plan to post up regular articles on what I have learnt in taking on such an adventure. Lessons learnt in safety, group kiting, equipment, packing, endurance and what works and what doesn’t. This should save you a big read about the whole trip as there will be many stories coming out but as I remember things I’ll post them up.

If there is anything specific you would like to know about in what we’ve learnt from the trip please comment below on this post and I’ll make sure to try and include it.

Keep checking back for my first post. In the meantime if you want more info about the torres crossing check out www.torrescrossing.com or facebook.com/torrescrossing

A real blast from the past here. Kiteweek kitesurfing event in Cairns from 2005!
IF YOU COME, IT WILL BLOW. They came, it blew, they rode, and they laughed — all the way home. Sceptics said Cairns was a no-wind zone. But the faithful came and got their just rewards with eight days of almost non-stop riding as FNQ delivered the goods one day after the other. A few of us turned up on the weekend prior to the comp and rode Yorkeys on Saturday and Sunday. Light winds Saturday made for a good warm-up day then Sunday it cranked. Rivermouth was 20-22 knots, smooth as glass and pumping for nearly two hours. By Tuesday we were flying small kites and jumping a big as you’d care to go. I was calling a few 10-15 m jumps and plenty of 6 sec + hang times on Sunday at Rivermouth — it was awesome. Caroline and Michaela, our “Kite Angels” from Germany turned up Sunday, offering massages for the worn and weary, and if ya missed them — well, tough luck… the photos tell the story. Lots of partying every night and plenty of riding at least a couple of hours every day.
