Hans sent through these great go-pro images from a strapless kitesurfing session he managed to jag the other day. This was Sunday’s great session I believe where we were blessed my sunshine and cranking winds. Even I managed to get down for my first kite in a while and got out on the 7m! Fab stuff Hans, keep the pictures rolling in.

If you haven’t yet tried strapless kitesurfing it’s easy to give it a go! A lot of people are put off by the thought of being strapless and whilst it does take a lot of practice it will always improve your kitesurfing skills and make a more rounded kiter. If you want a lending hand and some coaching on strapless kiting get in touch with Pete here at the site and he can help you through the process.

Southerly Madness

After a weekend of incredible conditions in Sydney and down the coast that were blessed by NE winds, blue skies and +30c temps we’ve had the mother of all Southerlies come through Sydney and smash us!!

I managed to arrive home from down south just as the big dark storm clouds rolled in and the wind died from being a ~12knot NE to what appears to be a 45knot+ Southerly with lightning and rain!

I did see 2 kites ready on the beach down at longy, I hope they were small and I’m taking a punt that one of them was Barber Shop Ben as I stole one of his pictures from Facebook :).

Pretty insane stuff, hope everyone stayed safe and didn’t do anything stupid. Below are a few shots I snapped when the storm first hit in Dee Why.

The Dee Why washing machine

So the wind has been blowing now for 2 days solid and at Long Reef we have about a 15+knots dead onshore SE wind blowing. The wind has left us with what can only be described as a washing machine! I popped up to the headland at Dee Why point to check out the view and have a cheeky post work beer. I took the small camera to get a few pics and got a few snaps of the only surfer out. There was a messy 5-6ft breaking at the point and it’s really unorganised and short interval. To my surprise there was a few kites on the beach, not to my surprise they all were kiting in the lagoon. Just as I left I saw one person on a black kite try to get out in the white water and seemed to be going ok. If it was you, good on ya!

Here are the few pics i took, not the best. The surfer looks very small and lonely out there.

AERIAL VIEW OVER LONG REEF & DEE WHY

Here is something a little different. Broken kiter Jon ‘two fin’ Turner has shifted his focus due to injury into building – then crashing – then rebuilding model planes. He’s strapping a go-pro to it and filming his flights over the beach.

He is getting some great footage of the beaches and surf from above and gives a different view of our favourite beach. Check out the YouTube vid below to view one of Sydney’s northern beaches Dee Why & Long Reef from a different angle.

UPDATE : SUNRISE LONG REEF SESSION

Arrived at the Long Reef carpark this morning in the near pitch dark still wearing pajamas. It was a pleasant surprise getting out the van that the temperature in Sydney has raised a few notches on the dial to a balmy 17c. Snapped a quick shot – that came out a lot lighter than expected – of the view.

The wind in the carpark was a little deceiving behind the bushes. After I’d pumped up the 9 and headed down with surfboard, only to have it blow away in the 30knot gust that came through with a rain squall I decided to swap to the Twintip.

The conditions today were not bad. There was plentiful wind that was quite on shore, surf was between 2ft and 6ft and very messy. Got taken out by one monster dumper and got a good working.

Good see Sonia and a few other die hards turned up early too.

I just had a quick look at these pics and I can derive the following from them. It was Xmas in 2005 in Sydney, it was hot, it was sunny, there was no wind, the guys were at Dee Why and they had a stupidly large kite! Oh and Rob had a mo. Love it.
