Gallery of Hans strapless kitesurfing at Dee Why

Hans sent through these great go-pro images from a strapless kitesurfing session he managed to jag the other day. This was Sunday’s great session I believe where we were blessed my sunshine and cranking winds. Even I managed to get down for my first kite in a while and got out on the 7m! Fab stuff Hans, keep the pictures rolling in.

If you haven’t yet tried strapless kitesurfing it’s easy to give it a go! A lot of people are put off by the thought of being strapless and whilst it does take a lot of practice it will always improve your kitesurfing skills and make a more rounded kiter. If you want a lending hand and some coaching on strapless kiting get in touch with Pete here at the site and he can help you through the process.

Another good read is Rob’s articles on choosing a surfboard for strapless kitesurfing. It’s a 3 part article and a great read.

I did see 2 kites ready on the beach down at longy, I hope they were small and I’m taking a punt that one of them was Barber Shop Ben as I stole one of his pictures from Facebook :).

Pretty insane stuff, hope everyone stayed safe and didn’t do anything stupid. Below are a few shots I snapped when the storm first hit in Dee Why.

Hey All,

Sorry for the lack of posting over the last few months. I’ve been busy doing other personal things and they had been getting on top of me!

You may have noticed that the website over the last few months has been getting slower, this has been frustrating Rob who in turn nagged at me until finally I think we found the problem. We’d been hacked! Fingers are pointing towards China we think and some clever sole had found some bug somewhere that meant they could use our website to send copious amounts of spam email. Thankfully our web provider (www.zuver.com.au) found the problem and helped us out and we got it back up.

So, what does this mean? Well, it turns out the ‘theme’ that we were running on the website was the problem, so that means it’s re-design time!! I’ve taken a bold step and just chosen one, we’ve actually PAID for this one too with thanks to the few people we have who have used our donate button over on the right to help chip in to keep this site running. (A BIG THANKS TO THOSE PEOPLE!)

So, this means I’ve got a few hours going back and fixing up pages, plugging away in photoshop to make some new graphics for the site. I’ve tried to keep it clear and simple and fast and I’m liking where its heading. If you’ve got any ideas for things you’d like to see on here give me a shout in the comments below.

On a side note… A big southerly smashed through Sydney today, I made it down with just a 7m right in time for it to die off just enough that I was struggling to keep going. Lots of people out enjoying themselves tho..

Happy Dayz..

A bit of digging on the old YouTube and I’ve found its still there. This was before the days HD video on YouTube but I’ve got the HD copy somewhere so maybe I’ll see if I can upload it. Anyway, it’s always good to look back at the old crew (some are still around) Aya, Chris, Mark B, Andre, TwoFin, Gavin and Frankie (Doing what Frankie does best. Massive jumps) and some very strange and still awesome music!

I remember this day being about 25knots southerly and pretty cold. Everyone is in wetsuits except the dog.

Enjoy

*** END UPDATE ***

Hi crew.

After a disappointing no show with the wind last night mother nature has come back with a half-decent southerly breeze for Saturday morning. I got here just before 8am and was surprised to see 2 keen chaps just heading out. Wind is a little patchy and gusty and there doesn’t seem to be much south of the pole at longy. The beach today at longy is packed with events on at Dee Why and long reef so take care if it swings more on shore and don’t take any risks close to shore.

Unsure how long the wind will stick about so get in early. I’m just leaving the beach and there is 3 guys out having fun on 10’s and 12’s. The water is super warm too.

What a crazy weekend we’ve had in Sydney. I’m not sure about you lot but when I woke up on Saturday morning I could have sworn something wasn’t quite right. Sydney was engulfed in a thick blanket of smoke from the bush fires out west. This finally pushed away from the coast as the day warmed up and a small nor-easter came in. On the beaches I almost thought we’d get some good wind right up until about 3pm when it died totally. This didn’t go unrewarded as I managed to get to see some locals up close in the form of a few large stingrays and a wobbegong shark in knee deep water. I even managed to jag a few pics and a cool little video.

The forecast for Sunday was WIND. And lots of it! I picked up the change on the charts at Ulladulla and then it was a waiting game. After checking the flatness of the surf at Dee Why I decided to do something I don’t do very often and shoot off down to Dolls Point to catch up with a few mates. When I drove past the bay it was cranking! I wish I’d stopped to get a picture. When I parked up at Dolls I saw one kite on the beach being sat on by someone who I guess was trying to keep it and then I was blinded by sand, I’d forgotten that about Dolls. Without even noticing my friends were in the car park I grabbed a brand new in the wrapper 7m Cab drifter (thanks Windsurfnsnow!) And a twinny and just got on with it. Managed to self launch without killing anyone no problems and went and did some big jumps. Came in, tested self landing in 40 knots which turned out to be easy (using my proper technique) and went to find out why people were just standing about. Had a fee more runs and jumps later and decided that was enough. A few peeps jumped on my gear to have a go, everyone came back safe and happy. One thing that was great to see was that of the few people that did go out 3 of them were girls! Its fabulous to see this level of skill in our female kiters especially when I’ve coached them at kitechicks. I had a real proud coachy moment standing on the beach. Well done girlies and thanks for not trashing my new kite.

Monday has continued with some great wind and waves back at Longy. I got there after 5 and it had gone a bit onshore, I decided to let my current injuries settle a bit and give it a miss but it did let me take some vids and snap some pics (must pack camera next time) Matty B was there to snap some good pics that we’ll get up in the gallery soon. Meanwhile check out vids. It’s good to have Matt Ma back in town and to see he’s still charging! Alex also put on a show and did some silly shit for us all to laugh at.

Sorry for the poor pics, they were from my phone..

He is getting some great footage of the beaches and surf from above and gives a different view of our favourite beach. Check out the YouTube vid below to view one of Sydney’s northern beaches Dee Why & Long Reef from a different angle.

Good work Turner, keep it up.
